AHOY! BACK TO THE GRIND!
So, we're switching to doing this bi-weekly. :P
Reason being, some weeks the update would just be "we're still animating" and that's it. Also because my ADHD tablets no longer appear to be working I get distracted VERY easily and thus doing these updates takes HOURS.
So yeah switching to bi-weekly. Hope you're all cool with that.
In other news, British weather is doing its thing again where it's grey and cloudy but this time it's also humid. There is no worse feeling in the world of weather than when the air of muggy. I feel so gross all the time. D':
Current Status:
General:
So as I talked about two weeks ago I took a small break to focus on a little PRIDE related comic.
I'm happy to say I got that done and it's doing pretty well for me. Tumblr in particular seems to love it. We'll get to that.
Since finishing that I've jumped back onto the rough animation of shot 3, and I'm making quick progress. The rough animation for Hawkins and pretty much done and I've generally done the beginning stages of animating Carbo into the last part of the shot. I like how it's coming together.
Katherine is also done with her exams and is fully back on board with modelling the ship in-between her day job and life.
So let's go into greater detail.
MoTR PRIDE comic:
So. Like I said 2 weeks ago, I really wanted to create a comic that would introduce how I come up with Member of The Revelry and really empathise how being transgender is one of the core aspects of the series. It's not the ONLY aspect, big certainly a big explicit part.
Anyway take a look:
Wanted to make a little animation for every panel to make it really pop and trying to get my point across in enough detail whilst hard limiting myself to a maximum of 10 panels was tricky. Still I think I did it and ultimately this comic has done exactly what was intended.
Get Member of The Revelry out there.
It got a lot of lovely supportive comments across the socials and even lead to some donations to our KoFi. Thank you everyone. <3
Rough Animation:
Animation:
So after I wrapped up the PRIDE comic I quickly switched back to doing rough animation on shot 3.
I'm very happy with how Hawkins is animated and I'm liking how Carbo is coming out thought there is still a bit of a ways to go with them.
(Video is struggling to process. Hopefully it'll resolve itself soonish.)
My biggest concern is the layering aspect that we have to use for mixing the 2D and 3D animation. You can see that both of the characters have body parts that move between these layers. Whilst it looks acceptable in a purely 2D environment my worry is that it is going to look "off" when introduced to the 3D blender scene.
Suppose we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
I know this bit is taking forever and frankly that's on me. I vastly underestimated the complexity of this shot but I am learning a lot about what our process pipeline is going to have to be built like. So in that regard, it's an invaluable time sink and will greatly inform the eventual MoTR Animation Guide.
My hope is that I can get this done by the end of this week or by early next week.
So hopefully in the next blog update I'll be nattering away about the Animation Guide.
3D Modelling:
I mentioned earlier on in this post, but Katherine has some free time again and is back onto modelling the ship. She's making great progress and I'm super excited to see the complete, textured, model.
New character, who dis?:
B.B
I mentioned a few weeks ago about our rewrite of episode 1 and how in the process of doing this we actually created a whole new character. This character is currently called B.B (which stands for Bagel Bringer) and they are, essentially, Lamenter's apathetic teenage kid.
Natka was real keen to jump on some very rough concept designs for this goober so I thought I'd so off her VERY early concepts here.
As you can see with these initial concepts we're very keen on the idea of BB having long arms that drag about was they move. Apathy is the key concept for this character. So much so they barely want to move, and doing so is always such a draaaaaag and URGH parents just don't get it.
Personally I love Natka's initial concepts. We just need to refine it and add some more design elements that exist throughout the Forces of Darkness.
The Coming Weeks:
1rregularCharlie:
Shot 3 rough animation, get it done and import the layers in the Blender scene and see how it looks. Begin working on the MoTR Animation Guide, help refine BB's design and create a model sheet. Complete rewrites and new boards for the 1st episode.
A lot on my plate. :P
Natka:
Continue playing around with BB's design.
Katherine:
Keep on trucking with the ship model.
